Welcome to the website of the Australian Lawyers Phil-Hellenic Association

The Australian Lawyers Phil-Hellenic Association (ALPHA), is a recently formed not-for-profit organisation.

ALPHA was formed by a group of Australian lawyers of Greek heritage who, with the knowledge that there are many colleagues such as themselves Australia wide, were inspired by a common vision to create a professional network for lawyers with a Greek Australian background or who are married to a Greek and who appreciate Greek traditions and history.

The idea behind ALPHA started in 2005 when a small group of lawyers of Greek heritage gathered together to celebrate the 25th of March 1821 – Greek Independence Day.  Former District Court Judge, James (Jim) Conomos and former NSW Barrister gave a stirring speech (logos) about the lead-up to Greek independence after almost 400 years of Ottoman occupation.  It was the cornerstone of a very enjoyable evening. This and successive annual dinners provided the spring board for the formation of ALPHA.

ALPHA was officially launched at the 2008 annual dinner when The Hon. John Hatzistergos, MLC, Attorney General and Minister for Justice embraced being the inaugural Patron of ALPHA.

Symposia

The Committee of ALPHA is organizing a series of stimulating symposia at which the Gerousia, the learned elders of our legal fraternity, will speak ("the logos") about their life experiences and/or judicial insights in the context of an Ancient Hellenic aphorism, saying or philosophical thought.

MCLE/CPD points -

Solicitors:

The Law Society does not accredit activities for MCLEs. Solicitors may claim 1 MCLE point per hour or part thereof if they consider the symposium to be relevant to their immediate or long term needs in relation to professional development and the practice of the law. You should refer to Rule 42.1 for the criteria in assessing an activity and Rules 42.2 – 42.9 for the amount of units that can be claimed for an activity.

Barristers:

The NSW Bar Association has accredited each symposium for 1 CPD point for Barristers. As the subject matter or content of each Symposium is likely to vary, Barristers should apply their CPD point(s) to the strand that is most appropriate for the Symposium attended.
